Snow-capped mountains, Atlantic dune beaches, medieval hill towns, and architecturally celebrated cities all sit within the same country. No other European destination competes on sheer variety.
The Canary Islands record more than 300 days of sunshine per year, and the Costa del Sol earns its title as the sunniest coastline in mainland Europe. For Irish travellers who need certainty, this matters more than most.
Direct flights from Dublin, Cork, and Shannon operate to most major Spanish destinations. Irish passport holders enter Spain without a visa, and the euro removes any currency friction.
From pintxos bars in the Basque Country to fresh-catch chiringuitos on the Costa Brava, Spanish food has real regional depth. Catalan cooking and Andalusian cooking are as different as two separate cuisines.
The Balearics and the Canaries serve completely different markets — one is summer party and scenery, the other is winter sun and walking. Knowing which island to pick is the decision that shapes the whole trip.
From stripped-back studio apartments on the Costa Blanca to five-star resorts in Tenerife, Spain covers every budget bracket. It is one of the few destinations where the quality-to-price ratio genuinely holds at the lower end as well as the top.

Spain divides into distinct regions — choosing the right one shapes your entire trip.
Costa del Sol: The coastline between Málaga and Marbella is Spain's most established resort zone, with Torremolinos, Benalmádena, and Nerja each offering a noticeably different atmosphere. Costa del Sol holidays suit first-timers who want a wide choice of accommodation and reliable direct flights from Dublin and Cork throughout the season.
Barcelona: Gaudí's Sagrada Família is still under construction after more than 140 years, the Gothic Quarter dates to the medieval period, and La Boqueria market has traded since 1217. Barcelona holidays work as a short city break or a starting point for the Costa Brava; three nights is the minimum to do it justice.
Tenerife: Far enough south to guarantee warm weather in February, close enough for a direct flight under four hours from Dublin. Tenerife holiday options cover the lively south (Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas) and the quieter north around Puerto de la Cruz, where the landscape changes completely.
Lanzarote: Volcanic black lava fields meeting white-painted villages, with artist César Manrique's fingerprints on much of its built environment. A Lanzarote holiday suits travellers who want guaranteed winter sun alongside interesting landscape; Timanfaya National Park covers roughly 51 square km of protected volcanic terrain.
Ibiza: Better understood as two destinations — the club scene centred on San Antonio and Ibiza Town, and the quieter northern coastline around Cala d'en Serra and Es Canar. Ibiza holidays work equally for couples who want nightlife and those who want to avoid it entirely.
Majorca: Palma is one of the Mediterranean's most cultured resort cities, Valldemossa is a 13th-century hilltop village, and the Serra de Tramuntana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Majorca holiday rewards those who look beyond the Magaluf strip.
Spain's activity range runs from Moorish palaces and Modernista architecture to surf schools and volcanic walking trails, and the best holidays to Spain leave room for both.
Seville's historic centre: The Alcázar royal palace, the Gothic Cathedral — the largest in the world by volume — and the Barrio de Santa Cruz all sit within walking distance of each other. Seville holidays consistently produce the same feedback: customers wish they had allowed more time. Two full days is the minimum; three is the honest answer for anyone who wants to eat well too.
Costa Brava and the Dalí Triangle: Rocky coves, medieval towns including Pals and Peratallada, and the three Dalí museums at Figueres, Púbol, and Portlligat sit along the coastline running north from Barcelona to France. Costa Brava holidays appeal most to couples and culture-focused travellers who want scenery alongside substance.
Gran Canaria's interior and dunes: Maspalomas dunes cover roughly 4 km of protected beach, and the mountain villages — Tejeda at 1,050 m, Artenara carved into volcanic rock — are a completely different experience from the coast. A Gran Canaria holiday that stays only in Playa del Inglés misses the best of the island.
Madrid for a short break: The Prado holds one of the world's great art collections — Velázquez, Goya, Bosch — and the Retiro park covers 125 hectares in the city centre. City breaks to Madrid suit a long weekend from Dublin; direct flights run year-round and it is easier to navigate than Barcelona for a short stay.
Watersports and active holidays: Fuerteventura is one of Europe's top windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations, with consistent trade winds on Sotavento beach from June to September. Most Costa resorts offer jet-skiing, paddleboarding, and boat trips to quieter coves.
Spain is a year-round destination, but the best time depends on your plans. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds, ideal for sightseeing. Summer (June–August) is perfect for beach holidays, while winter (November–February) is great for visiting the Canary Islands or enjoying festive markets.
