Timanfaya National Park covers roughly 51 square kilometres of lava fields, volcanic cones, and geothermal vents — active enough that rangers demonstrate the heat by pouring water into rock fissures. There is nowhere else on the continent where you can see this.
From the sheltered inlet at Playa Blanca in the south to the Atlantic surf breaks at Famara on the northwest coast, the island's beaches cover every mood and ability level. Papagayo, in a protected bay near Playa Blanca, is consistently rated among the finest beaches in Spain.
The local artist and architect spent decades shaping how Lanzarote developed — founding the Jameos del Agua cave venue, designing the Mirador del Río viewpoint, and campaigning to keep the island free of billboard advertising and high-rise construction. The effect is visible everywhere.
Lanzarote's volcanic soil produces a distinctive white wine at Bodega La Geria, and the fishing ports at Arrieta and La Graciosa serve fresh Atlantic seafood within hours of the catch. El Diablo in Timanfaya cooks over natural volcanic heat.
The island is roughly 60 km north to south. A hire car from Arrecife Airport puts every beach, village, and viewpoint within 45 minutes — and the roads are in good condition throughout.

Puerto del Carmen: The island's largest resort, built along a 5 km seafront running from the old fishing harbour at La Tiñosa to Playa Grande. The Avenida de las Playas covers the full range — watersports hire, restaurants, and bars. Most holidays to Lanzarote that include a family or first-timer land here, and it earns that position.
Playa Blanca: The southernmost resort, built around a marina and a quieter promenade. The ferry to Fuerteventura departs from here, and the protected Papagayo beaches are a 10-minute drive east. Noticeably calmer than Puerto del Carmen — the right call for couples or anyone wanting an early night.
Costa Teguise: Around 12 km north of Arrecife, with a good beach at Playa de Las Cucharas and a well-regarded windsurfing and kitesurfing scene. Family-friendly and self-contained, with a lively Sunday market in the centre.
Arrieta: A small fishing village on the northeast coast, about 28 km from the airport. The beach at La Garita is backed by local fish restaurants and well away from the main resort circuit. Some of the most consistent value among cheap holidays to Lanzarote comes from staying here or in the villages nearby.
Haría: The island's northernmost main town sits in a palm-filled valley at around 350 m — cooler and greener than the coast. The Saturday craft market and the César Manrique Foundation house at Los Valles are both worth the drive.
Between the national park, a coastline built for watersports, and a body of work left by one architect that covers the whole island, things to do in Lanzarote go well beyond the beach.
Timanfaya National Park: The Montañas del Fuego route is a guided coach circuit through the volcanic fields — no independent walking is permitted inside the park. The geothermal demonstrations at the entrance are genuine; rangers pour water into rock fissures and steam vents immediately. Combine with a camel ride on the perimeter lava fields for families.
Jameos del Agua and Jameos Festival: César Manrique transformed a collapsed volcanic tunnel into a concert hall, garden, and lagoon venue — home to a rare species of blind albino crab found nowhere else in the world. Evening concert events run through the season and are worth planning around.
Mirador del Río: Manrique's clifftop viewpoint sits at 475 m on the island's northern tip, looking directly across to La Graciosa. Built into the rock — from outside it is almost invisible. It ranks among the island's standout Lanzarote tourist attractions, and usually stays quieter than Timanfaya.
Watersports across the coast: Playa de Las Cucharas at Costa Teguise is the premier wind and kitesurfing beach, with consistent Atlantic trade winds through summer. Puerto del Carmen offers jet skiing, paddleboarding, and glass-bottom boat trips. Dive centres operate from both resorts — visibility off Lanzarote reaches 20 m.
Day trip to La Graciosa: The ferry from Órzola takes around 25 minutes and lands at Caleta del Sebo, the island's only village. No paved roads, two beaches within walking distance, and a handful of fish restaurants. Hiring a bicycle at the port and cycling to Playa de Las Conchas on the far side takes around an hour — guests who do this consistently rate it the highlight of the week.
The honest answer depends on what you want. November through March suits couples, walkers, and anyone avoiding crowds — temperatures between 17°C and 21°C, warm enough for sightseeing and outdoor dining. June through August is peak family season — reliably hot and busy. April, May, and October sit in the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, quieter beaches, and noticeably cheaper than peak.
