Sea temperatures stay swimmable from June well into October, and September often holds high-20s°C heat with thinner crowds and noticeably lower prices than the August peak.
The Parthenon, completed in 438 BC, stands above Athens, while Delphi, ancient Olympia and the Minoan palace of Knossos on Crete are all original sites — not reconstructions — that slot into one trip.
Each region cooks differently — Cretan dakos and raki, Santorini's fava and sweet cherry tomatoes, the simply grilled seafood of the smaller islands — and a proper sit-down dinner rarely begins before 9 pm.
With around 220 inhabited islands, the spread is real — the late-night beach scene of the south, the volcanic drama of Santorini, the olive-green Ionian, and quiet Cycladic hideaways reached by a single daily ferry.
Outside the two peak months, a week of half board on a mid-range island often comes in below the equivalent in the western Mediterranean, and because Greece is on the euro there's no currency to change and no exchange margin to lose.
Daily summer ferries link the main island groups, and high-speed catamarans cover Athens to Mykonos in around two and a half hours, so a two-centre trip is far simpler to put together here.
The country divides into a handful of island groups and one big mainland draw, and our Greece holiday packages reach every one each delivering a noticeably different week away.
Athens (mainland): Greece's capital pairs the Acropolis, the Plaka old quarter and a clutch of world-class museums with an easy ferry link out to the Saronic islands, which makes it the natural start or end point for Athens holidays that fold a couple of city nights into a wider island trip.
Crete (south): The largest island carries everything from the Minoan ruins of Knossos to the pink sand at Elafonissi, with the busy west around Chania and Rethymno and a slower, more traditional east near Sitia, so Crete holidays fill a full week without ever once repeating a beach.
Santorini (Cyclades): A collapsed volcanic caldera gives the island its clifftop towns of Fira and Oia, famous for sunsets that draw a crowd to the western edge each evening, and couples book Santorini holidays for that scenery as much as the beaches, which run black-sand and dramatic rather than soft and golden.
Corfu (Ionian): Green, hilly and Venetian-flavoured, with a UNESCO-listed Old Town and gentle north-coast resorts such as Sidari and Roda, which makes Corfu holidays an easy pick for families and culture-minded couples in equal measure.
Rhodes (Dodecanese): A medieval walled Old Town, the longest reliable beach season in the country, and resorts running from family-friendly Kallithea to lively Faliraki mean Rhodes holidays keep delivering sun from May right the way through to late October.
Zakynthos / Zante (Ionian): Known for the Shipwreck Beach (Navagio) framed by white cliffs and the turtle-nesting bays around Laganas, Zante holidays mix postcard scenery in the quiet north with a busier, younger resort strip in the south.
Kos (Dodecanese): Flat, cycle-friendly and lined with sand, with Hippocrates' plane tree in the harbour town and the ancient Asklepion healing site on the hill above, so Kos holidays make an easy, low-stress pick for first-time family travellers.
Halkidiki (mainland north): Three forested peninsulas reaching south of Thessaloniki, with blue-flag beaches and a calmer, more local feel than the headline islands, where Halkidiki holidays reward travellers who'd take pine-backed coves over nightlife any day.
Beyond the sun lounger, the sheer spread of things to do is a big part of why Greece holiday packages appeal to such a wide mix of travellers.
Walk through ancient Athens: The Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the modern Acropolis Museum sit within a short walk of one another; go early, before the cruise-ship crowds arrive and the midday heat settles over the marble. A combined ticket covers the Acropolis plus several other ancient sites and saves queuing twice.
Island-hop by ferry: High-speed catamarans and slower car ferries connect the Cyclades, Dodecanese and Ionian every day in summer — a Santorini–Mykonos–Paros loop is the classic first-timer route, and a single open-jaw flight pairing makes it painless.
Boat trips & sea caves: Day boats run out to the Blue Caves of Zakynthos, the smoking volcano and warm springs in the bay off Santorini, and the deserted islets scattered around Crete and Rhodes, usually with a swim stop or two thrown in.
Hike the gorges: Crete's Samaria Gorge runs roughly 16 km down to the Libyan Sea and is one of Europe's longest walks of its kind, with far shorter trails on most islands for a cooler early-morning leg-stretch.
Wine and food tours: Santorini's Assyrtiko vineyards, the raki distilleries of inland Crete and the bold reds of Nemea on the mainland all run tastings, very often with a long, unhurried lunch attached to the end. Most cellars are an easy taxi from the main resorts and take walk-ins outside the August rush.
June, September and the last week or two of May are the standout stretch — seas warm enough to swim in, daytime temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s°C, and far smaller crowds than the peak. July and August are the hottest and liveliest months, and the right call if you're locked to school holiday dates rather than free to travel either side of them. Some of the cheap holidays to Greece worth having surface the moment you step outside those two months, as prices and airport queues both ease.
