Los Cristianos: The original southern resort — more relaxed than Playa de las Américas, with a working harbour, a ferry port for La Gomera, and a town centre that functions independently of tourism.
Puerto de la Cruz (north coast): A proper colonial town 35 km from the southern resorts — 17th-century architecture, the Loro Parque reserve, and the César Manrique-designed Lago Martíanez lido. The best beaches in Tenerife for atmosphere rather than pure sun-and-sand are in and around Puerto de la Cruz.
Playa de las Américas: Tenerife's main nightlife hub, directly connected to Costa Adeje along the seafront. It delivers exactly what it promises — activity from morning to 4 am.
El Médano: A low-rise town at the southeastern tip built around a wide natural beach and a year-round Atlantic wind. The windsurfing here is among the best in Europe; if that's not the draw, the beach and the local fish restaurants are worth the drive.
Between Teide National Park, a working Atlantic coastline, and a north coast that rewards a full day's exploration, there is no shortage of reasons to step away from the pool.

Siam Park: Consistently rated one of the top waterparks in Europe, Siam Park sits just outside Costa Adeje with a Thai-temple design, the Tower of Power slide, a wave pool producing 3-metre waves, and a lazy river running the length of the park. A full day here is worthwhile; most southern hotels can arrange transfers.
Loro Parque, Puerto de la Cruz: A well-established wildlife park in the north with one of Europe's largest penguin enclosures, gorillas, tigers, and the PlanetOcean dolphin facility. Worth combining with a half-day in Puerto de la Cruz town itself.
Whale and dolphin watching from Los Cristianos: Resident pods of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live in the Tenerife–La Gomera channel year-round. Boat trips depart daily from Los Cristianos harbour, typically running 2–3 hours with near-guaranteed sightings.
Day trip to La Gomera: The ferry from Los Cristianos reaches San Sebastián de La Gomera in 50 minutes — the island is almost entirely national park, with dense laurel forest in Garajonay and a coastline with almost no tourist development. A straightforward contrast to the resort belt.
The honest answer is that holidays to Tenerife work in every month — the south coast averages 20°C even in January. May, June, September, and October are the standout months: temperatures between 24°C and 28°C, warm enough to swim, and noticeably fewer crowds than peak summer. For Tenerife holidays 2026, February deserves serious consideration — Carnival runs through the month and the south coast is warm enough to swim throughout.
