A handy location for us, pleasant staff but not the hotel it once was

    rating22 Jun 2026

Perfectly pleasant but understaffed, often hard to find anyone in reception; despite being residents we could not get a dinner table the second night so had to go to an alternative hotel down the road - a hotel should always keep sufficient tables for residents OR tell them the night before to book the following day; rooms very good but dead flies not cleared during cleaning

    Avoid at all costs!

    rating02 May 2026

Do not stay in a 'Courtyard Room'. These are very dated, furniture is old and worn. For those old enough to remember - it's very 'Crossroads Motel' - including the flimsy, old, worn doors and lack of soundproofing. There is a lot of noise - literally every 2 minutes or so - from the water heating system that sits above the rooms though the staff did move us to a quieter room after we complained. Toiletries, coffee/tea stuff is all low cost/budget and certainly not a reflection of their Booking.com 4 star rating. The breakfast included budget white bread. It was all very very poor and did not reflect it's rating at all. I would like to say that the main building was better but both the bar and dining room had significant damp patches and damage to their ceilings which were just examples of the general state of the place. The accommodation and breakfast were so poor, I'm finding the other reviews on Booking.com very hard to believe.Given this was the third hotel of four on a road trip and the second most expensive (the rooms appear significantly cheaper now) I have complained in writing as directed by the reception staff. Oddly enough, no response.Summary:Location = 15 min walk to town but quiet and pretty grounds.Rooms = courtyard ones are awful. Dated, worn, noisy. Value = terrible. It's definitely not 4 star in anyone's imagination. It should be a budget stay at a much lower price.Cleanliness = the room was cleanNoise level = terribly noisy in the courtyard rooms. The water heating system makes a significant noise every 2 minutes continuously.Service = OKFood and Beverage = awful.

Grande Dame in need of some attention

    rating29 Apr 2026

Stayed here as part of a tour last week. The exterior of the hotel is beautiful and the resident hairy coos are so cute! The staff was lovely, but this hotel needs a major renovation inside. It’s a grand dame that needs so love and attention. Last renovation looks to have been made in the 90s and it shows. Hopefully the current owner brings her back to her former glory!

A lovely hotel but not a good stay

    rating01 Apr 2026

Arrived at the hotel and were surprised at the grandeur of the building exterior and interior. Checked in quickly and easily and took cases to our room. We had booked crfeam tea so went straight down to the bar. Nobody there to greet us and waited, and waited. Eventually somebody came to our table. Advised we had booked cream tea and shortly afterwards were served with bucks fizz and scone, cream and jam etc. We received the evening dinner menu from reception which we took to our room to look over and choose what we wanted. When we went to the restaurant in the evening, we were presented with a slightly different menu with our choices not on there. The main course chicken I had was tough, part of the meal very hot and part luke warm. For dessert we were advised they did not have the vanila icecream which went with a few of the dishes. I chose the apple crumble with custard which was awful, large pieces of hard apple and a paper thin layer of crumble. The server did not ask us if the food was alright or why I left most of my meal and dessert. When we went to our room the noise was awful and the receptionist eventually found out it was coming from the other restauarant which had a group eating. We were moved to a much quieter room on a different floor but was very inconvenient unpacking, packing and unpacking again etc. We did not get much of an apology either. The bedroom and bathroom were very nice but our experience overall was not good. Breakfast was average. Service was not helpful or friendly.
