Pretty Hotel But Disappointing Spa and Breakfast Experience

    rating10 Apr 2026

We stayed at The Gainsborough Bath Spa for our anniversary. Reception was welcoming, the hotel is in a perfect location, and the room was very nice. We also appreciated the complimentary bottle of wine. However, we chose the hotel primarily for the spa, and the access times for hotel guests (8–10am and 7–9pm) were disappointing. These restricted slots felt inconvenient and were overcrowded, which gave the impression that hotel guests were being prioritised less than external spa visitors, despite the high room rates.Breakfast was also poor value, with the £25 buffet limited to continental options and hot items charged separately.A simple improvement would be to introduce a booking system for hotel guests, with allocated time slots to better manage capacity while maintaining a more relaxed experience.Overall, a lovely hotel, but the spa access and breakfast offering fell short of expectations for the price.

Things have changed and not for the better

    rating09 Apr 2026

Overall still a good experience but maybe getting too expensive for a day spa. A friendly welcome including being wished Happy Birthday which was noticed from my completed health and safety form. The spiced chocolate machine that used to be poolside has now moved to the reception area which is a shame. Many of the jets in the main pool were not working and the drains were a little smelly. My massage with Shua was fabulous. I would go back just for a massage with him but that is the problem. Unless you are staying at the hotel you cannot simply book a massage you have to book a day spa which includes an afternoon tea. Given it was my birthday, I was going out to dinner and didn’t need the tea which was average at best. Again they recognised my birthday which was a nice touch.

    Nice Hotel, but expensive

    rating08 Apr 2026

The hotel is ideally located for those wishing to see Baths sites and shopping, it's also only a short walk to the station. Staff were friendly and always available. Hotel layout and condition was good, appeared well maintained, clean and it was an enjoyable experience staying there. The spa is lovely, it has everything, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and hot baths, we loved it. What we did not appreciate was the residents can only use the spa free of charged between 08:00-10:00 and 19:00-21:00 hours, other than that it was c£20 per person. For me this is not reasonable.Rooms were nicely appointed, bed was a little high, though I believe you can ask for them to be lowered. Digital channel TV, but not internet connected and no sky if that makes a different to people wanting to log into things like prime. If you buy anything in the hotel the prices are extortionate, breakfast is £40 per person per day for a basic english, continental is £25 and drinks are £12 a glass. Loads of more reasonable places to eat nearby. We enjoyed our stay overall.
