    Disappointed

The hotel is ok if you only want to sleep and not spend any time there. We arrived late night and the person at the reception was sleeping. Took more than 10 minutes to kind of wake up!!! Moved from the couch to the desk, felt asleep on top of the desk, then he moved to the computer, he also was sleeping at the computer, couldn’t even speak! Finally he gave me the paper to register and the key. Very unsafe to have someone like him working there. They should have someone professional and responsible enough to be awake during the night and do a good job!!!

I was so impressed with the welcoming and the hospitality of this worker that will make me want to come back to Merida. For the price this hotel is great , they even give you toast and cofee for breakfast. The hotel is not perfect and if you are super picky you will find small problems .For me was great

    Not exactly what I expected

The hotel is called historic but Id say run down is closer to the actual truth. The bed in my room is probably the only newish thing. Its very hard. There is a small pool in the back but havent gone in to the restaurant. Bottle water is in my room and big refill bottles on each level of floors. Not the friendliest reception staff but the housekeepers are all pleasant.

    el espanol revisited

    rating25 Aug 2019

I stayed there in 2018, and when I visited merida again, I chose El Espanol Centro again. The reason is that it is the only budget full-scale hotel closest to ADO bus terminal, which I used a lot (and keep in mind, the terminal is open 24/7, and you can eat-out and shop safely at ANY time - this is great! As well, no problem to get a good taxi cab.) After a few budget hotel I stayed before, I fully enjoyed its room dimensions, cleanliness, toiletries, again. Front desk and security 24/7 are great. All this for the same price as some quiant BB. I noticed they have a travel agent agent at day time at the desk. The drawbacks are a meagre breakfast (just coffee and toast) and lack of elevators (I lived at the 3rd floor this time...). I noticed though, that many mexican families stayed there ordered hotel's "buffet breakfast" for about 10 bucks instead of this "included" breakfast. This is actually wise. So, if you stay in Merida for having a lot of tours around the city, this is a saviour!

    not bad for the location

    rating12 Aug 2018

I did many bus trips from Merida, and being close to the ADO terminal was essential. The area around ADO terminal (unlike Norestre) is not seedy, but there are not so many good solid hotel options. El Espanol is a real hotel, not a small hostel. The room rates posted in the lobby are excessive; but if you get it by online rates, it is quite good. It is true the breakfast is nothing to talk about. But may be their a-la-cart food is better. There is a good restaurant around the corner. It is just 15 minutes walk to the central square; but ADO was more important for me. A/C worked good; the hot water - I had to wait for it. I spent three nights there and did not hear much noise (as it happens in downtown hotels, especially, on weekends!). The room was squeaky clean. The hotel itself is dated, but well preserved. The clientele, I think, are mostly Spanish speaking families and middle class business people. The security is good (and they do not barricade themselves at night, which is good!) Wi-fi worked good. So it is pretty solid for a basic stay of a non-demandive traveller. Or, you can pay twice more for a north location and take taxi to the terminal.
