The historic core runs roughly 2 km end to end, so the Old Town, Charles Bridge, Mala Strana and Prague Castle link up on foot without a single taxi. Three metro lines and an extensive tram network cover anything further out, day and night.
Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle complex in the world at nearly 70,000 square metres, founded in the 9th century and still the official seat of the Czech president. St Vitus Cathedral stands inside its walls, free to enter at the back.

Karlstejn Castle is 40 minutes away by train, the Sedlec Ossuary at Kutna Hora around an hour, and both are reachable without a hire car. Cesky Krumlov, a full UNESCO-listed town to the south, makes a longer day out for anyone with a spare 24 hours.

Stare Mesto (Old Town): The medieval core and the natural first base for sightseers. The Astronomical Clock, the Old Town Square and the start of the Charles Bridge all sit here, and most city breaks to Prague begin within these few hundred metres. It is also the busiest quarter, so expect the crowds to build by mid-morning.
Mala Strana (Lesser Town): Across the river beneath the castle, this is the quietest of the central districts, all baroque palaces, the John Lennon Wall and Kampa Island's mill stream. Couples tend to choose it for the calm and the short climb up to the castle gardens.
Vinohrady: A handsome 19th-century residential district east of the centre, full of cafe-lined squares and good-value design hotels. Some of the better-value cheap holidays to Prague put you here, ten tram-minutes from the Old Town but paying local rather than tourist prices.
Zizkov: The bohemian bar district, home to the 216-metre TV Tower with David Cerny's crawling-baby sculptures clinging to its sides. It reputedly has more pubs per square kilometre than anywhere else in the city.
Nove Mesto (New Town): Wenceslas Square, the riverside Naplavka market and the National Theatre all sit in this district, and the tram links make it a practical base; several of our Prague travel packages use hotels here for exactly that reason.

Prague Castle and St Vitus: Allow half a day for the complex, taking in the cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane and the changing of the guard at noon. Arrive by 9am to climb the hill ahead of the tour groups. Number 22 on Golden Lane is where Franz Kafka wrote for a spell during the First World War, and the lane's doll-sized houses once quartered the castle goldsmiths.
Charles Bridge at dawn: The 516-metre, 14th-century bridge carries 30 baroque statues and, by mid-morning, several thousand people. Walk it before 8am and it is almost empty, with the castle catching the early light behind you.
Vltava river cruise: One-hour sightseeing boats and longer lunch and dinner cruises leave from quays near the Charles and Cechuv bridges, giving you the skyline from the water. They are among the calmer ways to see the centre on busy city breaks.
The Jewish Quarter (Josefov): The Old-New Synagogue dates to the 1270s and is the oldest active synagogue in Europe, while the Old Jewish Cemetery holds some 12,000 visible headstones layered over centuries. A single ticket covers the main sites and the museum, and the Spanish Synagogue's gilded Moorish interior is the one most visitors leave talking about.
Petrin Hill and lookout tower: A funicular climbs to the 1891 lookout tower, a 60-metre echo of the Eiffel Tower, with the widest views over the spires. The surrounding orchards and gardens are a quiet break from the crowds below.
May, June and September bring mild weather around 22 to 25 degrees and thinner crowds, which is why most Prague holidays 2026 target those months. December is colder but draws visitors for the Christmas markets, and the shoulder weeks offer the best prices of the year.
