Széchenyi & Gellért baths: The yellow neo-Baroque Széchenyi in City Park is the grand outdoor option, open year-round and steaming through winter, where the outdoor chess players are a sight in themselves; the Art Nouveau Gellért, opened in 1918, is the more ornate indoor choice for a calmer soak.
Parliament & the embankment: The riverside walk takes in the Parliament, finished in 1902, and the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial of 2005, a moving tribute set just upstream. Book the Parliament interior tour ahead in summer.
Buda Castle & Fishermen's Bastion: Reach the hilltop on the 1870 funicular or on foot, then take in Matthias Church and the white turrets of the Bastion, finished in 1902, for the classic view across the river.
Evening Danube cruise: A 60- to 90-minute sightseeing cruise after dark lights up the Parliament, the Chain Bridge, and Buda Castle from the water — consistently one of the highlights guests mention back to us. Boats run frequently from spring to autumn, so there is no need to book far ahead unless you want the dinner version.
Great Market Hall: The vast 1897 iron-and-glass hall at the Pest end of Liberty Bridge sells paprika, salami, and souvenirs downstairs, with lángos stalls on the upper floor — a good lunch stop mid-sightseeing. Go before noon if you want to browse the produce stalls before the lunch rush fills the aisles.

District V (Belváros): The central business and shopping district holds the Parliament, St Stephen's Basilica, and the Danube promenade, all walkable from one base — a morning here covers the essentials of any Budapest city break.
District VII (Jewish Quarter): Home to the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest in Europe, plus the densest run of ruin bars, street food, and independent cafés. Lively and central, and the natural choice for a first visit.
Castle District (Buda): The cobbled hilltop above the river carries Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and the Fishermen's Bastion, with the finest panoramas across Pest. Quieter in the evening and well suited to couples.
City Park (Városliget): Beyond Heroes' Square lie the Széchenyi baths, Vajdahunyad Castle, and the zoo, making this the green corner that anchors many family holidays in Budapest.
District VI (Terézváros): Andrássy Avenue, a UNESCO-listed boulevard, runs from the Opera House to City Park, lined with grand townhouses, theatres, and the M1 metro beneath it — elegant and well placed for sightseeing.
April, May, September and early October bring the most comfortable weather — warm enough to walk all day, cool enough to enjoy the baths. December is the other highlight, when the Christmas markets light up Vörösmarty Square and St Stephen's Basilica. July and August are hot and busiest along the river.
