Malta Holidays 2026/2027

History, Culture, and Nightlife in Malta

History: Malta has a rich history that dates back over 7,000 years, making it one of the most fascinating destinations in the Mediterranean. The island has been influenced by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Knights of St. John, and the British, all of whom have left their mark. Visitors can explore historic sites such as the ancient city of Mdina, the awe-inspiring Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, and the megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, which are older than the Pyramids of Egypt. Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is filled with stunning architecture, including St. John’s Co-Cathedral, which houses Caravaggio’s famous painting The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.

Culture: Malta’s culture is a vibrant blend of Mediterranean traditions, with strong influences from Italy, Britain, and North Africa. The island hosts colourful festivals throughout the year, such as the Maltese Carnival in February and the village festas, where towns celebrate their patron saints with fireworks, parades, and music. Traditional Maltese cuisine is also an important part of the culture, offering dishes like pastizzi, rabbit stew, and ftira, a delicious Maltese bread. Art lovers can visit the National Museum of Archaeology, while music and theatre fans can enjoy performances at the Manoel Theatre, one of Europe’s oldest theatres.

Nightlife: When the sun goes down, Malta comes alive with its exciting nightlife. St. Julian’s, particularly the area of Paceville, is the island’s party hub, packed with bars, nightclubs, and beachside lounges. For a more laid-back evening, visitors can enjoy waterfront dining in Sliema or a romantic stroll along Valletta’s historic streets. Malta also hosts open-air festivals and concerts, with international DJs and live music events taking place throughout the year. Whether you’re looking for a cultural experience, a historic adventure, or a night of dancing by the sea, Malta offers something for everyone.
