Hotel Antiche Mura

Nice looking B&B, not living up to its potential. It is centrally located in the city, terrible management by the host. When we arrived there were no towels, the shower and closet were both broken. Among this, it was a bed and breakfast with NO breakfast. The owner stated this was because of COVID restrictions in place even though there weren’t any in regard to this amenity. We left the room early because of all of this and the unprofessional response we received from the owner, and we did not receive a refund for the nights we didn’t sleep there. On a side note, the room was clean with air conditioning.

We stayed here for the second week of our honeymoon. The person that greeted us couldn’t speak English, so we had no idea about the breakfast arrangements or the free WiFi, so we ate out all the time. The B&B is very quirky! The bedrooms are very dark! They are advertised as soundproofed, which is surprising as we lost count how many times we clearly heard the occupants of other rooms having sex at all hours of the day and night! Also a man occupied the room next to us and he spent an hour in the bathroom each morning, coughing repeatedly before emptying his bowels....yes we heard the lot! Having said that, our room was spacious, nicely decorated, very clean and cleaned daily and had a large comfortable bed! It made a nice base for our travels each day. Gela is not what we’d expected or as nice as Google images show. There is a huge amount of rubbish in the local area although this is the same throughout Sicily! The area is quite run down and the B&B is in the middle of a housing estate. The restaurants that are good are hidden away so go looking for them, they are worth the effort. There are some beautiful, hidden beaches a few miles away that are very quiet and relaxing. The local people are very kind and definitely go out of their way to help. Overall not at all what we expected for our honeymoon, but Gela did have some hidden gems that made our stay better than we’d first expected on our arrival.

We were welcomed by Giovanni (who unfortunately doesn't speak any English) and he showed us our very big room for two nights. We had only 1 towel and no shampoo/showergel, so he gave us some. Our bed was extremely comfortable with memory foam mattresses. The room was really noisy, we could hear everything from the street next to it. You can only enter the estate if they open the door for you or if you have a key, which gives a nice feeling of safety for your belongings. The breakfast was Italian simplicity with sweet stuffed croissants with either ricotta, creme, marmelade, or chocolate. Giovanni made us espresso. In the evening we got some pizza from a place around the corner and ate it in the kitchen area, which was no problem at all. Giovanni even showed us to use utensils like Italians instead of eating it with our hands. Antiche Mura isn't next to the beach, you have to walk to it for about 10 minutes. When we checked-out Giovanni didn't know that we already paid via Booking and he didn't understand us or the computer. Another person came to help and told him (after checking the system) that we indeed already paid. It's a nice B&B for a few nights and I wouldn't recommend it to stay any longer. Giovanni's hospitality makes it worthwhile to stay here if you visit Gela. We only stayed in Gela to visit Agrigento and after that drive back to the east side of Sicily. Gela isn't a pretty town, so you wouldn't miss out.
